Nonetheless, the shifts are firm and power delivery effortless while the all-wheel drive system has been revised to make it more adaptable to changing conditions.
Only by comparison with the STI is it anything less than breathtaking. Its handling is needle-sharp, steering beautifully responsive and acceleration instant without a hint of turbo lag.
While I haven’t tried the ’06 WRX, I couldn’t say my ’05 is “without a hint of turbo lag”.

Motor Trend was sent on a 1350-mile forced march by Subaru to road test the Subaru WRX and the Subaru WRX STI 2006.
One hour of unchaperoned driving along 15 miles at the top of Pikes Peak taught us what 20 hours of Interstate catatonia could not: That all of Subaru’s WRC racing pays off handsomely in the civilian WRXs and STIs. Each can be made to corner neutrally on a wide variety of surfaces from asphalt to hard-pack dirt to loose gravel.
