2006-2007 Subaru WRX

Driving Northwest reviews the 2007 Subaru WRX, praising its great performance for the price and saying the only real competition a Subaru WRX STI has is from the Mitsubishi Evo. They recommend the 2007 WRX for its performance, not its style.

I like their conclusion:

To race an STI in a road rally, simply install a racing harness and roll cage and it’s set to jet. And it will jet. For those who are willing to sacrifice some comfort and style for performance, the Impreza STI WRX is a great deal.

2007 Subaru WRX tuned by STI

January 31, 2007

Subaru Australia is launching a new 2007 Subaru WRX special edition, tuned by STI. This special edition features over $12000 of extra equipment for only $7000 over the price of a standard Subaru WRX (Australian dollars).

Some of the performance equipment include a tuned ECU chip and a low back-pressure exhaust, giving a power boost of about 13hp and increasing the overall responsiveness of the engine.

Here’s what you get for the extra bucks:

Performance

  • Tuned engine control unit (ECU)
  • Low back-pressure exhaust muffler
  • Short shift gear linkage

Handling

  • 18-inch Enkei alloy wheels
  • Pirelli P-Zero Nero tyres
  • Sports suspension
  • Lowered springs
  • Tuned struts
  • Larger front stabilizer bar
  • Tuned rear stabilizer bar mounting
  • Pilot ball rear suspension arms

Interior

  • Leather trim
  • Aluminium gear knob
  • Electric sunroof

Only 200 units of this special edition of the 2007 WRX are being made, and they are available in both rally blue and obsidian black. The black version, as pictured here with its charcoal wheels, is simply gorgeous.

Subaru Legacy STI

The Subaru Legacy STI is on sale in Japan! Imagine a Subaru Legacy, tuned by STI – Subaru Tecnica International – to offer significant performance upgrades over the base model.

Here’s an overview of the upgrades we’re talking about:

  • 280 hp, 253 lb-ft torque
  • High-performance Bilstien shocks (car is 15mm lower, springs are 50% stiffer)
  • Substantial improvement of the handling
  • 18 inches wheels
  • Subaru WRX STI Brembo calipers

While all 600 models of the 2007 Subaru Legacy STI have been sold in Japan, we can probably expect to see the upgraded Subaru Legacy models in North America sometime next year. That’s something to make the Subaru WRX line jealous!

Look, just because the WRX Sport Wagon is ugly doesn’t mean it’s embarrassing. It’s ugly in an inoffensive way, even with that goofy air scoop atop its hood and that upside-down Ford Edsel grille. It elicits gentle smiles, not ridicule. Think of it as a homely, but talented and precocious child.

[...]

The WRX Sport Wagon comes with what Subaru calls “symmetrical all-wheel drive.” That means power is transmitted from the car’s engine to all four wheels at once. That gives you better traction than regular all-wheel drive, which shifts power from wheel to wheel — “from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip” — as needed.

Aside from the wing delete—a smaller lip graces the trunk of the Limited—the exterior gets a new, deeper front spoiler sure to catch every parking log the car encounters, painted Enkei wheels (still wrapped in the same 225/45ZR-17 Bridgestone Potenza RE070s), and subtler black Brembo brake calipers with white lettering instead of the gold/red calipers of the regular STI.

Most of the upgrades are inside the car, where a black leather interior awaits, with a standard sunroof to heat the seats in the summer and seat heaters to do the job in the winter.

Of course, handling is only part of the package. The new 2.5 litre boxer engine is fitted with an intercooled turbocharger and nets 230 horsepower and 235 lb. ft. of torque. It’s an enjoyable engine: sort of Porschey-sounding with that roughness at lower revs characteristic of a horizontally opposed mill. Variable timing makes for a wider powerband, and in low load, low rev situations it propels the WRX along adequately, achieving around 9L / 100km. Squeeze the throttle and soon the boxer mill growls with the turbines high pitched whine overlapping and outpacing the exhaust note. It’s an amusing noise, and the vigorous acceleration is equally as likely to make you smile.

I’ve been driving a 2007 WRX TR for the past week, and can’t say that I’ve missed the regular WRX’s automatic climate control system, foglamps, or upgraded audio system with a 6-CD changer. The TR’s manual heater and air conditioner worked just fine in the fickle fall weather, the single-CD player audio system is not a major hardship, and the simpler seats were still comfortable enough, and provided good lateral support when playing hard.

[...]

With top-notch power and handling at a lower price, the Subaru WRX TR offers a good deal for the budget-minded performance enthusiast.

Though it’s the least expensive version of the WRX, the TR comes standard with everything most buyers will need: air conditioning, power mirrors, power windows, remote keyless entry, front side-impact airbags, a sound system with a single-disc CD player, cruise control and a tilt steering wheel.

The Impreza lineup has become more appealing with its price and packaging as well. The base model 2007 Impreza 2.5i sedan has a starting price $800 lower than its predecessor, despite being identically equipped. A 2.5i Special Edition will hit showrooms in October carrying $2,800 worth of additional equipment including a moonroof and 6-CD changer, although the price is just $1,500 more than the base model. All WRX sedans and sport wagons include a standard moonroof at no extra charge. The 2.5i Sedan starts at $22,695, with the range topping out as the WRX STI Sedan, priced at $48,995. The WRX sport wagon and sedan are priced at $35,495.

Prodrive says its version of the 2.5-litre, turbocharged boxer engine delivers 185kW and 360Nm, the standard engine 169kW and 320Nm. Subaru SA says the car will sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.7sec and top out at an electronically limited 210km/h.
